EV Charger Rebates & Incentives in North Carolina (2026 Guide)

If you’re installing a home EV charger in Raleigh, Durham, Cary, or Chapel Hill, there are two incentive programs worth knowing about, plus one that recently expired. Here’s where things stand as of August 2026.

Federal Tax Credit: Expired June 30, 2026

The federal Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit (IRS Section 30C) offered a 30% tax credit, up to $1,000, on the cost of home EV charging equipment and installation. That credit expired on June 30, 2026, and there’s no extension pending. If you installed a charger before that date, talk to your tax preparer about filing IRS Form 8911. If you’re installing one now, this credit is no longer available.

Duke Energy Charger Prep Credit

Duke Energy still offers a Charger Prep Credit for North Carolina customers who install a Level 2 or higher-powered charger. It’s a one-time credit that has historically covered up to roughly $1,133 per household, applied toward conduit, wiring, outlets, and panel or breaker upgrades needed to support a charger. You can either hire your own electrician and submit a paid invoice for reimbursement, or have Duke Energy coordinate an approved contractor and apply the credit directly to your bill. Amounts and program terms can change, so confirm current details on Duke Energy’s website before you budget for it.

What About North Carolina State Incentives?

As of mid-2026, North Carolina does not have a statewide tax credit specifically for home EV charger installation. Utility-level rebates, like Duke Energy’s, are currently the main financial incentive available to homeowners in Wake, Durham, and Orange counties. Some incentive programs come and go, so it’s worth checking Duke Energy’s site directly before you install.
